Certificate in Fund Raising Management

The Indiana University-Perdue University Indianapolis Center on Philanthropy hosts the Fund Raising School. This is a unique program designed to hone fundraising skills. The school offers quite a few 3-7 day workshops on fundraising techniques. These attract an international audience of persons interested in learning research-substantiated principles and methods. Workshops are team-taught by experienced fundraisers.

I received a certificate in fund raising management in 2007. Among the courses I completed to earn this certificate were the following:
  • Principles & Techniques of Fundraising. This week long course is the foundational program for the certificate.
  • Developing Annual Sustainability. This covered strategies in implementing and sustaining the annual fund.
  • Developing Major Gifts. This covered leadership methods for developing a major gifts program, defining the role of the governing board, and donor research methods.
  • Planned Giving: Getting the Proper Start. This covered the fundamentals of planned giving, matching of planned giving instruments to prospective donors, and the nuances of trusts, annuities, various wills and bequests, and gifts of property.
  • Interpersonal Communication for Fundraising. This covered communication styles, understanding constituencies, and influencing prospective donor’s behaviors.
