I’ve been privileged to have participated in accreditation activities involving several accrediting agencies. These activities have been on three levels:
  1. Coordinator and senior editor of institutional self-study reports. I’ve led steering committees and compiled the final self-study reports at two institutions. These reports have included reports for focused evaluations, substantive change requests, interim visits, and full re-accreditation visits. One self-study report for which I was the lead editor was subsequently selected by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to be exhibited at their annual conference.
  2. Consultant-evaluator. Also referred to as a site team visitor, consultant-evaluators perform peer evaluations of other institutions as an integral part of the accreditation process. A site team validates the findings and conclusions in an institution’s self-study, interviews faculty, students, staff, and governing board members, and produces a team report containing recognition of accomplishments and recommendations for improvement. I’ve served on teams, either as a team member or site team chairperson, for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Council on Chiropractic Education, and the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education.
  3. Member and Leader of an accrediting agency. The Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) is the specialized accrediting agency approved by the US Department of Education to accredit doctor of chiropractic degree programs. I was a member of the Board of Directors of the CCE from 1999-2004; from 2003-4 I served on its executive committee as the secretary-treasurer. In 2006, I was elected to the Commission on Accreditation of the CCE, where I served as a commissioner; I was on its executive committee as vice-chairman from 2007-2009. I was elected as chairman of the COA in January 2009. In March 2009, the CCE Board and the Commission merged into a single entity and I was elected as chairman of the newly formed Council. I was re-elected twice and will complete my final term as chair in January 2012.
